01 — Everyday use

Start at the door. Follow the path.

List the routes between parking, entrances, gates and outdoor seating. Note changes in level, door locks and steps that are difficult to see. Treat these practical needs separately from decorative lighting on a facade or planting.

From inside the house, check the view through the windows too. Positioning a bright fixture in that view can be distracting even when it looks attractive from the street.

02 — A considered finish

Choose what to highlight.

Select a few architectural details rather than lighting every surface equally. Compare fixture size and finish with the doors, trim and materials already on the home. Aim light at its intended surface, keeping neighboring windows and property boundaries in mind.

• Entrances: make the door, lock and approach easy to see.
• Paths and steps: consider the route as a whole, including turns and changes in level.
• Seating: plan for conversation and comfortable views, not just brightness.
• Architecture: choose a restrained set of features to emphasize.

03 — Before work starts

Settle the details before ordering.

Discuss fixture locations, controls, available power, cable routes and access for future maintenance with the contractor handling the work. Have the electrical professional confirm fixture suitability and installation requirements for each location before purchase.

If lighting is part of a larger renovation, decide how it relates to door replacements, exterior finishes and the construction sequence. Bring photographs and a short list of priorities to the first project conversation.
